Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafés: What we heard

We have published a new Enter and View report sharing what people told us about Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafés across Leicester and Leicestershire.

Between April and June 2025, our staff and trained volunteers visited cafés across the city and county to listen to people using the services, speak with staff and observe how the cafés operate.

Across all locations, feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Many people described the cafés as a “lifeline” that provides safety, connection and support during difficult times.
The cafés provide low-barrier access to emotional and practical support, including one-to-one conversations, peer support and signposting to other services. While cafés differ in how they operate, their shared strength lies in building supportive relationships and responding to what people need.

However, people also highlighted challenges, including low awareness of cafés, unclear referral routes and pressures on staffing, space and resources in some locations.

Our report makes clear recommendations to improve awareness, access and sustainability, helping ensure Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafés continue to support people effectively.
