Getting there: Bus access and patient care
Our latest insight report, Getting there: Bus access and patient care, explores how changes to local bus routes have affected people’s ability to reach local health services.
When the number 15 bus was diverted away from Ibstock High Street in 2022, residents in Ibstock and Heather lost a direct link to GP surgeries, pharmacies, dentists, shops and regular connections to nearby towns.
When the number 15 bus was diverted away from Ibstock High Street in 2022, residents in Ibstock and Heather lost a direct link to GP surgeries, pharmacies, dentists, shops and regular connections to nearby towns.

Our survey of local people found:
- 30 out of 49 respondents said their access to GP and pharmacy services has been negatively affected.
- Many reported relying on taxis, family lifts or struggling on foot.
- Older and less mobile residents said it affects both their health and independence.
Despite these challenges, people praised the care and kindness of local GP staff and pharmacy teams. The report shows that while the quality of care is good when people reach services, the biggest barrier is getting there in the first place.
The report recommends closer working between councils, transport providers and communities to explore solutions such as a safe direct bus service, community shuttles or transport subsidies.
There is some positive news. Since July 2025, the new FoxConnect on-demand bus service has launched, linking Ibstock and Heather to Coalville and other towns, offering more flexible transport options.
